Goodbye Wifes and Daughters

Sunday, October 17, 3:30 p.m., WV 105

Writing a nonfiction book is kind of like underground mining coal. It requires digging, often in uncomfortable and unfamiliar places, sorting through mounds of material to discover what's of true value and getting a little dirty. Journalist Sue Kushner Resnick experienced all of that in writing Goodbye Wifes and Daughters, the story of a 1943 coal mine disaster that killed 75 men, ruined a community and illustrated the cost of putting profits before safety. Resnick, a New Englander, will discuss how she found the story on a family vacation and why she was compelled to give its victims a voice.
